My lady’s friggin’ brilliant as ever, and forever out doing herself. She made this head of Justin as a pinata for his birthday tonight. Justin plays bass for NIN so it was a small affair with Trent Reznor and Nikka Costa and other such cool parent-aged rock illuminati. Not only do Justin’s daughter and ours got to pre-school together, but Justin and I went to pre-school together too. As I said, a family affair. Justin loved Ilse’s handy work and couldn’t bare to see it bashed to pieces. So he tore a hole in the back, dumped out the cuffs and banana condoms for us all to scavenge and then donned his new crown with love and care.

Special things happen at sunset on the West Coast. Especially when you’ve had to wait for them all day. The body painting escapade took a bit longer than provisioned for but that worked perfectly, putting us into some very kind light – eight hours later. And so I went Boogey boarding. It’s always supposed to work the way it’s supposed to, and it always seems to. Blessings on us. Plus Teairra Mari is a major pro and makes taking pictures of her very easy. She puts her glow on and Malibu steps right in line. This shoot was as fruitful and on the money as the last with her, and somewhere in all of this is the cover for her new album due out this summer. Shout out to a terrific crew that really made everything come together at the right moment to make just that perfect moment. Our business is moments, and these really shine.

This is the kind of blood thirsty cur you regularly run across on these acrobatic photo shoots.

Corrizo Plain is splendid piece of lost CA a few hours out of town. You head out over the Grapevine and then go left up into the hills. Spring is aflame right now in the gentle yet prehistoric landscape. Underfoot is the San Andreas fault, so bigger things are constantly promised against the calming scenery. You bush camp in at midnight and wake to dawn that restores all that is animal in you. Then the day proceeds with adventures heaped upon themselves. You leave finally out one of the most lovely CA drives down HWY 58 through the top of the Los Padres Forest, through Santa Margarita cowboy town, to the coast at San Luis Obisbo and the hot springs at Avila Beach. Dig the whole photoshow of our trip here.

With this photo the essence of that song and the license it takes with the poetry of the super ecstatic moment finally makes all the sense in the world, “….in the sky….”
